Description
For us, and probably for many other people as well, the Royal Oak is the most iconic model of Audemars Piguet, and the reasons for this are countless. Beginning its journey in the 1970s, thanks to the light hand of Gérald Genta, this series has gone through numerous editions, but several things have never changed – the octagonal case, the “waffle” dial, the design of the lugs, and so on.
In 2012, the brand decided to respond to the modern trend and produce its first “true” diving watch. And although we ourselves have serious doubts as to how many of these watches have actually been used for their intended purpose, the model achieved considerable success. Initially, it was offered only in the version with a black dial – so as not to distract the customer base. There are several innovations from the brand in this model – first, the use of a second crown to operate the internal bezel; second, the regular buckle, for the first time in the ROO series; and third, the double hour marker at “12 o’clock”, for the first time since the original ROO in 1972.
In 2015, its renewed version was launched – with a transparent caseback, and along with it a version with a silver dial was also introduced. Two years later, several variants in, to put it mildly, “fresh colours” were launched, as well as the chronograph version. And in 2021, the new 15720 generation was presented – the differences compared with the previous one are several, but very significant. The crowns are now ceramic, the strap has a quick-change system, the dial design has been updated and, of course, the most important change – the new movement. Today’s model comes in a very modern combination: Khaki Green dial, rose-gold markers and hands, as well as gold caps on the ceramic crowns.
As most of you probably know, the so-called “classic” ROO models such as 15300 and 15400 are powered by the brand’s in-house Calibre 3120 movement – this model has a different “heart”. The new Caliber 4308 operates at the unusual-for-AP frequency of 28,800 vibrations, with 234 parts, 32 jewels and over 60 hours of power reserve, and in order to emphasise the noble origin of the movement, the balance is made of 22-carat gold, blackened in this case.
