Description
We admit that for us, the Rolex GMT-Master II in all its variations is one of the most beloved Rolex models. We will even admit that in this case, the older versions are dearer to our hearts – but this one is also exceptionally attractive. It is no coincidence that this is the model with the most nicknames – Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Root Beer, as well as the newer Batman and the modern versions of Pepsi and Batman. All of them sell above their official price – a fact that, in our opinion, is proof of a correct market strategy and price positioning.
But why is this model so liked and sought-after? It is neither the most expensive, nor the most robust, nor the most complicated timepiece. On the older models, the bezel insert is aluminum with printed markers, but with this model in 2008, the ceramic bezel was introduced for the first time. The material is an in-house development, and Rolex calls it Cerachrom. The bezel is two-toned – black for the night and blue for the day, which gives it the designation BLNR (Bleu/Noir), and from there comes the popular nickname "Batman".
Certainly, one of the main reasons for its success is the so-called "true GMT" in-house movement, Rolex Caliber 3186, which has a reputation for being exceptionally robust, accurate, and long-lasting. The Parachrom hairspring used improves accuracy and resistance, providing a power reserve of over 48 hours and a longer service life. The model presented is from the last series with this caliber, launched in 2010.
As is well known, Rolex's water-resistant cases bear the name Oyster – and the GMT-Master II fully justifies this, offering water resistance up to 100 meters.
The dial is exceptionally clean and easy to read, and the luminescence on the hands and indices ensures excellent visibility at night. This model is among the first where Rolex transitioned to blue luminescence through Chromalight technology – more pleasant to the eye and with a longer-lasting glow, while during the day the indices appear milky white. Furthermore, the so-called "Maxi dial" is used here – with larger hands and markers, which significantly improves legibility.
Despite the fact that the GMT-Master II was created as a professional tool, today it is above all a luxury accessory. This is also evident in the design choices – for example, the anti-reflective coating is applied only on the underside of the "Cyclops" lens, which preserves the characteristic brilliance of the sapphire.
The case back is solid and clean – without decorative elements. Rolex uses 904L steel, which is more resistant than the standard 316L, especially in contact with salt water. The brand controls a large part of the metallurgical processes, which guarantees exceptional quality of the materials and finish – something that is clearly felt in this model.
The overall impression is complemented by the 24-hour bezel, intended for reading a second time zone. The ceramic Cerachrom is more resistant, glossier, and significantly more scratch-resistant compared to the aluminum inserts of the past. The characteristic inverted triangle at 12 o'clock completes the look.
For years, the GMT-Master II was offered with both the Oyster and the Jubilee bracelet. With the newer generations, initially only the Oyster remained, and subsequently, the Jubilee returned. The main difference compared to the older models is in the clasp – it is now crafted from a solid block of steel and features an additional security system.
Rolex created this model in the 50s and has been perfecting it for decades. From a practical timepiece for travelers, today it has become a versatile luxury accessory that looks equally good with a suit as it does with casual clothes. The GMT-Master II will not only be a reliable companion but will also retain its value – which makes it one of the most desirable models in the brand's portfolio.
