Description
We admit that for us, the Rolex GMT-Master II in all its variations is one of the most beloved Rolex models. Even more so – in this case, the older versions are dearer to our hearts, but as they say – it's a matter of taste. It is no coincidence that this is the model with the most nicknames among collectors – Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Root Beer, as well as the newer Batman and Pepsi. All of them trade above their official price, including the contemporary versions – a fact that, in our opinion, is proof of the brand's correct market strategy. The model presented today bears the name "Batgirl," the reason for this being the use of a Jubilee bracelet, which distinguishes it from the classic Batman.
But why is this model so sought-after? It is neither the most expensive nor the most complicated watch. One of the main reasons is its "true GMT" movement – the Rolex Caliber 3285. It offers a 70-hour power reserve, an improved automatic winding system with a ball-bearing rotor, and about 15% higher efficiency. The reversing wheels are Teflon-coated to reduce friction, and the movement includes 14 patents and over 90% new components. Furthermore, it is twice as precise as the COSC standards, which places it in the "Superlative Chronometer" category.
As is well known, Rolex's water-resistant cases bear the name Oyster – and here the model fully justifies this name, offering water resistance up to 100 meters.
The dial is exceptionally clean and legible, and the luminescence of the hands and indices ensures excellent visibility at night. The Chromalight technology is used here, which emits a blue light – more pleasant and easier on the eye, while during the day the indices appear milky white.
Although the GMT-Master II was created as a professional tool, today it is above all a luxury accessory. This is also evident in a number of design decisions – for example, the sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating only on the underside of the "cyclops," which preserves the characteristic sheen of the outer surface.
The case back is solid and clean – without unnecessary inscriptions or decorations. Rolex uses 904L steel, which is more resistant than the standard 316L, especially in contact with salt water. The brand controls a large part of the metallurgical processes, which guarantees exceptional quality of the materials and finish – something that is clearly evident in this model.
The 24-hour bezel has a clear function – reading a second time zone. On older models, the insert was aluminum, but since 2008, Rolex has introduced the ceramic material Cerachrom. Here, the bezel is two-toned – black for the night and blue for the day, which also gives it the designation BLNR (Bleu/Noir). It is this color combination that leads to the nickname "Batman," and with the Jubilee bracelet – "Batgirl."
The contemporary versions of the GMT-Master II bring back the tradition of the Jubilee bracelet, as is the case with this model, introduced in 2018, along with the new movement.
Rolex created this model in the 1950s and has perfected it over the decades. From a practical tool for traveling professionals, today it has become a versatile luxury accessory that looks equally good with a suit as it does with casual wear. The GMT-Master II will not only be a reliable companion but will also retain its value – which makes it one of the most desirable models in the Rolex portfolio.
