For the first time, we have the opportunity to present to your attention another Rolex legend – but one that has a particularly 'noble' origin, and even if we are guided only by the model's nickname, we can understand that it is truly very special – and not just for the brand…
Rolex presents one of its most successful and popular models in 1956 – the first self-winding, water-resistant chronometer wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week.
Very quickly after that, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 'President' becomes an icon that transcends time and fashion. The model has undergone few changes since its debut and is currently launched in 3 different sizes – 36 mm, 40 mm, and 41 mm. The one presented today is the closest to the original and, for us personally, the most correct size.
The watch presented is from the new generation, in a 40 mm size, and following Rolex's tradition of launching so-called 'anniversary' models, this one is also produced with a special green dial.
Rolex is one of the few watch manufacturers that produce their dials in-house, and exotic procedures are their 'home' specialty. Rolex has used materials such as meteorite, malachite, lapis, wood, porcelain, and countless others, but few of them can rival the visual brilliance and depth of the green dial, especially in combination with the rose gold of the model presented today. And all this beauty is framed by the President's classic fluted bezel with its individual character.
It is a known fact that Rolex is the largest manufacturer of luxury watches with a production of over a million each year, but regardless of this fact, it is a brand that not only best retains its value over time, but also has some models that are almost impossible to simply buy in a distributor's store. One of these models is precisely the President – and unlike the other sought-after sports versions, here the fact that it is made of a precious material does not make it easier to find – it also requires waiting and being put on waiting lists....
Of course, at the heart of the watch 'beats' an in-house Rolex movement – in this case, this task is entrusted to the 3255 – a generation from the last decade, which has an increased power reserve of 70 h, a seriously improved automatic winding system where the rotor is now on a ball bearing, and its efficiency is increased by 15%. As for the lubrication, the reversing wheels, as one of the problematic areas from the point of view of friction, have a Teflon coating! The new 3255 has 14 integrated patents and more than 90% new components, and it is also twice as precise as the requirements for an official COSC chronometer.
It is an indisputable fact that the President long ago became a fashion icon and a desired attribute for every self-respecting watch connoisseur, and perhaps for this very reason, Rolex does many things in this model so that the appearance and the overall impression the watch creates prevail over its functionality. The first thing that makes an impression is the sapphire – Rolex is notorious for the fact that they do not put anti-reflective coating on the watch crystals – there are several versions for the reasons, but we like this one the most: that Rolex does it so that the appearance of their watches does not change for a long time and generations of its owners can enjoy this consistency. The second, of course, is the fact that the manufacturer managed to create an icon more than 60 years ago, and through all these years and different models, the design has barely changed – another proof of the timelessness of classic designs. The third is the bezel – it is classic for the model, and this contributes to the attractiveness of the offering.
For the case back of the watch, Rolex uses a simple solid case back (as, by the way, in all its models) – in the case of the President, it is devoid of any markings, inscriptions, or other 'decorations'. As we all know, Rolex can be called fanatics when it comes to the metals they use – a large part of the metallurgical processes are done in-house to guarantee a uniform quality of the raw material – in this specific case, the new Rolex alloy is used – Everose – this is the name given to the brand's rose gold.
