Description
Today, for the first time, we have the opportunity to present to your attention another Rolex legend – but one with a particularly "noble" origin. Even from the model's nickname alone, we can understand that it is truly special – and not just for the brand.
Rolex introduces one of its most successful and popular models in 1956 – the first chronometer wristwatch that is self-winding, waterproof, and displays both the date and the day of the week. Very quickly thereafter, the Rolex Day-Date, also known as the "President", becomes an icon that transcends time and fashion. The model undergoes minimal changes over the years and has been presented in three main sizes – 36 mm, 40 mm, and 41 mm.
The exemplar presented today is from the new generation in the 40 mm size. Following Rolex's tradition of creating so-called "anniversary" versions, it is distinguished by a special green dial, combined in a relatively rare configuration with an 18-carat white gold case.
Rolex is one of the few manufacturers that craft their dials entirely in-house, using a variety of and often exotic materials – meteorite, malachite, lapis lazuli, wood, porcelain, and many others. However, few of them can compare to the visual depth and brilliance of the green dial, especially in combination with a precious metal. This entire aesthetic is completed by the characteristic President fluted bezel.
It is a known fact that Rolex is the largest manufacturer of luxury watches with an annual volume of over one million pieces. Despite this, the brand is known for its exceptional ability to retain the value of its models, and some of them are extremely difficult to acquire directly from an authorized dealer. One of these models is precisely the Day-Date – and unlike the sports models, here the use of precious metals does not facilitate access, but on the contrary – it often requires being placed on waiting lists.
At the heart of the watch works the in-house Rolex Caliber 3255 movement – a modern generation from the last decade. It offers 70 hours of power reserve, a significantly improved automatic winding system with a ball-bearing rotor, and about 15% higher efficiency. The reversing wheels are Teflon-coated to reduce friction, and the movement includes 14 patents and over 90% new components. Furthermore, it is twice as precise as the standards for a COSC chronometer.
The dial is perfectly balanced and easy to read – a light green base with a sunburst effect, combined with gold Roman numerals and hands.
It is undeniable that the President model has long become a fashion icon and a symbol of status. This is precisely why Rolex often places an emphasis on the appearance and overall feel. One of the characteristic elements is the sapphire crystal – the brand traditionally does not use an anti-reflective coating, with one of the reasons being to preserve an unchanged appearance through the generations. Another key element is the almost unchanged design for more than 60 years – a testament to the power of a classic. And, of course, the characteristic fluted bezel, which contributes to its recognizability and elegance.
The case back is solid and clean, without unnecessary inscriptions or decorations – typical for Rolex. As we know, the brand is extremely precise regarding the materials used, with a large part of the metallurgical processes being carried out in-house to ensure uncompromising quality.
