Description
We are convinced that to the question “Which is the best watchmaking brand in the world?” many would point precisely to Patek Philippe. With its over 180-year history of watchmaking excellence, this statement is certainly not without merit. Antoni Patek – a poor Pole who left his homeland due to political pressure after Russia's victory over Napoleonic France – settled in Geneva, where in 1839, together with his partner François Czapek, he founded the company “Patek, Czapek & Cie”.
In 1844, at an exhibition in Paris, Patek met Jean-Adrien Philippe – an exceptionally talented watchmaker, known for his innovations, including ultra-thin movements. In 1845, he joined Patek's new company, and in 1851 it was renamed Patek Philippe & Co. The brand quickly gained international recognition and numerous awards, and in 1868 created the first Swiss wristwatch. The period from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the Second World War is marked by numerous patents and the creation of the Patek Philippe Calatrava – one of the brand's most iconic models.
In 1976, the Patek Philippe Nautilus appeared – arguably the most recognizable model today, and at the end of the 20th century, the brand solidified its position with another legendary line – Patek Philippe Grand Complications, to which the model we will pay special attention to belongs.
The timepiece presented today is part of the current series, introduced in 2016, and is aimed at actively traveling gentlemen. The main differences compared to the previous model (5140) are in the size of the case and the use of the so-called Breguet style in the design of the dial.
Patek Philippe Complications Annual Calendar 5205G-010
This model is a classic representative of the brand, equipped with complications such as an annual calendar and a moon phase. At its heart works the in-house movement Patek Philippe Caliber 324 S QA LU 24 – an automatic caliber with an exceptional finish. The case follows the Calatrava aesthetic, with a diameter of 40 mm, classic hour markers and functions that fully justify the name “Complications” – day, date, month, moon phase, and a 24-hour indicator. The specific model is executed in 18-carat white gold, which in combination with the black dial creates an exceptionally elegant and impressive presence.
The case back is transparent, which allows us to enjoy the precisely decorated movement – with a power reserve of 45 hours and 34 jewels.
The leather strap also deserves attention – made of alligator leather, hand-stitched, in a classic black color, combined with the characteristic Patek Philippe folding clasp.
“You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.”
