Description
Undoubtedly for all admirers of Panerai, it is the Luminor case that in recent years comes to mind first at the mention of the brand.
In 2014, following the line of updating all its models (mainly by replacing the movements with in-house ones and making small design changes), Panerai introduced one of the flagships of the series with numerous complications and interesting design solutions – the model with the code name PAM00580.
This is one of the few models of the brand in which the Panerai-developed material Carbotech is used. It is a composite of carbon fibers subjected to isostatic compression, which results in an extremely light, strong, and corrosion- and scratch-resistant material. Not many brands dare to use such technologies, both due to the complexity of production and the uncertainty of the market's reaction. In this case, however, Panerai manages to achieve an impressive result.
The combination of an entirely black case, a black dial, and beige Arabic numerals creates a strong yet balanced presence. The watch does not impose its distinctiveness, yet at the same time, it cannot go unnoticed. The Assolutamente strap of aged nubuck, stitched with thick thread in the same tone as the numerals, complements the look perfectly.
Among the more interesting features of the model are the ceramic look of the case, the brand's standard 44 mm size, the placement of the chronograph pushers on the left side, the Flyback function, as well as the quick strap change button located on the inner side of the lugs.
As is well known, Panerai is among the brands whose watches allow an exceptionally high degree of freedom in the choice of straps. This model looks equally good with a rubber strap as it does with bolder or more classic options – black is universal and allows for almost unlimited combinations.
The luminescence is of a high level – the indices and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova, which ensures excellent visibility in low light conditions.
Above the dial is a slightly curved sapphire crystal with a thickness of 3.5 mm and an anti-reflective coating, and the water resistance of 300 m makes it a fully functional instrument. Of course, the brand's characteristic protected crown is also present, which is comfortable and easy to use.
Inside the watch beats the automatic in-house P.9100 movement – part of the brand's new generation of calibers. It features 37 jewels, a Glucydur balance, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations, a KIF Parechoc anti-shock system, two barrels, a Flyback function, and a 72-hour power reserve. The movement is decorated with Geneva waves, blued screws, and engravings, and to be in sync with the watch's look, it has a darkened finish. The case back has a sapphire crystal with a smoked effect, which complements the overall presence.
