The Swiss manufacturer Oris, well known for producing high-quality and at the same time surprisingly affordable watches, began production of the new series of watches for underwater sports in 2012, united in the Aquis series – and the presented watch is another representative of a special limited edition series of models that the brand dedicates to a legend in the world of freediving – Carlos Coste. In 2003, he became the first person to break the 100-meter barrier and subsequently broke this record several times, with his last achievement made in 2010 during a 150-meter dive in the waters around the Yucatan Peninsula. It is in his honor that Oris continues to respect his great achievements by creating another special timepiece, the Oris Carlos Coste Limited Edition, in the large case size for the series – 47 mm, and presented it in 2019 in a very limited series of only 2000 pieces. This is the optimal size for a diver, given the fact that it is primarily intended for diving - size and legibility become extremely important.
The manufacturer has taken care to use all its long-standing experience in the production of high-quality timepieces in the crafting of this model. A brushed case made of high-quality titanium, a brushed titanium bezel with a ceramic insert – note, the colors used for the indications are in a signal orange color, as the purpose of this coloring (besides looking modern and attractive) is that this color is one of the few that continue to be distinguished from others even at great depths. One cannot help but agree that underwater this functional quality of the watch is very important - well, Oris is of the same opinion. As for its use underwater, after one look at its dial you will understand that when it comes to diving, this is the watch that gets the job done - the well-sized markers with an abundant Superluminova coating allow the readings to be deciphered even in the darkest water. The watch is water resistant to an impressive 1000m/100 bar, which allows its use at sufficiently serious depths.
The watch's bracelet, as with the other Aquis models, is semi-integrated into the lugs, with massive links that are fastened by screws, and the clasp is again massive, with a double button, micro-adjustment, and a diver's extension – it, as well as the clasp, are again made of titanium, which lightens the entire watch.
Beneath the solid steel caseback lies the Oris Calibre 678 – this name actually hides the Valjoux 7750, with a 42-hour reserve, 28 jewels, and operating at 28,800 vph - the workhorse, used by many brands in many of their models – an unpretentious, robust movement that is durable in its operation and inexpensive to maintain.
In conclusion, we will say that if you want to own a robust, sensibly made instrument, carrying within it much thought and technical perfection – this watch is the right choice, and the fact that it is part of a limited series makes it even more attractive.
