Description
The history of Omega begins back in 1848, when the brand's founder, Louis Brandt, started assembling pocket watches by hand from parts supplied by local craftsmen in his hometown of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. It is important to mention that the name “Omega” did not appear until 1894, when Louis Brandt's sons – Louis-Paul and César Brandt, who had taken over the business following their father's death in 1879 – created the famous Omega calibre. In 1903, the entire company adopted the name of this movement.
Omega watches have long been closely associated with glamorous film and sports stars – for example, the Omega Seamaster is famous for being James Bond's watch of choice for many years, starting with Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye in 1995 and continuing through to Daniel Craig in his final Bond films. The honour of being brand ambassadors has also been proudly carried by celebrities such as Nicole Kidman, swimmers Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe, and many others.
Today, Omega is known for its meticulous approach to testing new movements, cases and all other components of its watches. Every new movement undergoes numerous tests before entering serial production, with particular attention paid to precision, reliability and resistance under real-world conditions. Omega's collection includes the Constellation, Seamaster, Speedmaster and De Ville series. Whichever Omega model you choose, however, you can be sure that every watch meets the brand's high standards.
The Omega Seamaster began its journey back in 1948, and today every Omega enthusiast has the opportunity to choose from the different members of the extensive Seamaster family: Seamaster Diver 300M, Seamaster Planet Ocean, Seamaster Aqua Terra and others. Of all the contemporary Seamaster models, the Aqua Terra comes closest to the original with its dressy style, but, as one would expect, it has undergone significant evolution since then – both in the brand's design and in the tastes of its watch enthusiasts.
Today we have the pleasure of presenting to your attention one of the distinguished representatives of the Seamaster Aqua Terra collection, namely the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M 41 mm 220.12.41.21.03.002.
Despite all the technological achievements incorporated into this Aqua Terra, whichever way you look at it, it remains a thoroughbred Seamaster. We are reminded of this as soon as we see the traditional “Ω” on the dial, the smooth bezel and the characteristic hands – all of which make the watch exceptionally elegant and beautiful.
The blue dial, with its teak-deck pattern, offers excellent contrast thanks to the applied hour markers and the intriguingly shaped hands. The seconds hand is finished in a vivid shade of blue, adding a subtle contrast to an otherwise restrained watch. The date window is positioned in the newer location for the series at 6 o'clock, the hands are faceted, and the wonderful effect is completed by the contrasting bright blue accents.
One of the things that is almost impossible to capture in its full beauty in photographs, at least with our own skills and abilities, is the different dimensions of the dial. Depending on the light and the angle from which you view it, the blue changes its shades, while the horizontal texture creates a sense of depth that is difficult to reproduce in a photograph.
All this splendour can be admired exceptionally well thanks to the slightly domed sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating – from certain angles, the crystal almost seems to disappear, as though you could touch the hands without anything standing in your way. The bezel is smooth and fixed, seemingly providing security and protection for all the magnificence of the watch, while together with the stainless steel crown it completes the overall impression.
The transparent caseback allows you to enjoy Omega's beautifully decorated movement, which deserves particular attention – the Co-Axial Omega Calibre 8900, operating at the unusual frequency for many other movements of 25,200 vibrations per hour (3.5 Hz), with a 60-hour power reserve and 39 jewels.
Two barrels, automatic winding in both directions, a silicon balance spring, a free-sprung balance and a Co-Axial escapement – all of this demonstrates how seriously Omega approach the development of their movements. The calibre is certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS and is resistant to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss, making it one of the most technologically advanced movements in its class. It is no coincidence that Omega offer a five-year international warranty on their new watches.
The strap is extremely comfortable thanks to the folding clasp with easy-to-use pushers, while the fact that it is made of soft, flexible rubber in a unique grey colour makes the watch's presence even more impressive. Combined with the blue dial and polished steel elements, it creates an exceptionally successful balance between sporty character and elegance.
