In 1904, a good friend of Louis-François Cartier, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, complained about the unreliability and impracticality of using a pocket watch while flying. To help their friend, Louis Cartier and Edmond Jaeger decided to produce a wristwatch – their initial idea was to adapt a pocket watch, but it wasn't long before they changed their plans and came up with a completely new design and, consequently, a new product. The watch not only received Santos-Dumont's approval but also became a hit among the jeweler's many clients. Thus, from this event, the timeless design of the Cartier Santos was born – I say 'timeless' precisely because this happened back in 1904, and the pilot's name became the name of one of the most popular watch models. With its geometric shape and exposed screws, the watch quickly became a Cartier classic. The version of the model presented today is perhaps one of the most eye-catching versions of the Santos – first, because it is crafted from 18-carat rose gold and second, because the watch has a very simple, yet eye-catching design and suits every wrist. The steel octagonal crown is adorned with a beautiful faceted sapphire, the galvanized grey dial bears Cartier's famous Roman numerals and silver-colored sword-shaped hands.
